About

Game Turn is a 100% open source tool that allows wargames to be played over the internet.

I’m working towards a release of GameTurn, code named “Dog Food”. It’s a software development term for using your own software. I’ve told my regular opponent I’m only going to use GameTurn for our games from now on – so I’ll have to make sure it work well! I hope to be able to beat him again (just kidding Bill) in Battle for Germany in about a week.

Since Bill has to take the abuse of using software in development I added a feature he really wanted – the ability to flip the map and play from any of the 4 sides of the board. Here’s a look at Battle for Germany from the allies side (click for a full sized view):

When complete Game Turn will implement the following features:

  • Supports both Email and Live Play (and allows switching between the two in the middle of a game).
  • Web site for finding games and opponents.
  • More than a virtual board, Game Turn will manage movement and combat, but always allow the player to override the software.
  • Extensible via code to allow support for almost any game feature.

See the developer section for more details.

When finished Game Turn will have four major components:

  1. Player - The software players use when playing a game. A desktop Windows application.
  2. Author - The tool used to adapt games for use in Game Turn.
  3. Web Site - This web site will allow players to find opponents and games.
  4. Server - A server to allow players who cannot connect Peer to Peer to play live. The server will facilitate multiplayer games. The server can also be used in situations like tournaments to prohibit cheating (not that any Grognard would!)

Help

Want to help? As Game Turn matures we will need all sorts of help - especially people interested in adapting games for the platform.

Right now anybody with an interest in playing wargames is welcome to try release "A5" and offer us their suggestions. Get Game Turn from the download page.

We are very focused now on core software development, so if you're a Grognard who's also a coder, why not click on the developer link and join in!
